Washington Realtor ListingsThe State of Washington was organized as territory on March 2, 1853, and entered Union on Nov. 11, 1889 as the 42nd state. As part of the vast Oregon Country, the Washington territory was visited by Spanish explorer Bruno Heceta for Spain in 1775, by American Capt. Robert Gray in 1792, and Capt. George Vancouver for Britain in 1792–1794. During the early 1840's, Rival American and British settlers had conflicting territorial claims that threatened war. Washington is one of the country's leading lumber producer.
