Nevada was organized as territory on March 2, 1861 and entered the Union October 31, 1864 as the 36th state. The word "Nevada" comes from the Spanish word meaning "snow clad" - a reference to the snow-covered mountain peaks of the Sierra Nevada range. The state covers an area of 110,567 square miles, making Nevada the 7th largest state in the US. The population was 1,998,257 from Census 2000, making Nevada the 35th most populous state in the US.
