Missouri Realtor ListingsIn 1821 Missouri was admitted as a state as part of the Missouri Compromise. It was often called "Gateway to the West" because it served as a departure point for settlers heading to the west. The famed Lewis and Clark Expedition also started in Missouri. Bordering states include Iowa to the north; on the east, across the Mississippi River, by Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee; on the south by Arkansas; Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska are located to the west. The state ranks 17th in population with over 5.5 million residents, from Census 2000. In size, Missouri ranked 21st with 69,709 square miles of land.
