Georgia is the 24th largest state in the US, covering an area of 59,441 square miles. The population was just over 8.1 million in the 2000 census, making Georgia the 10th most populous state. Textile manufacturing and timber for lumber are two of the states leading industries. Atlanta, which became the state capital in 1868, is a prosperous city with major national corporations, and it is considered one of the economic and cultural centers of the Southeastern US. Bordering States include Florida to the south, Alabama to the west, Tennessee & North Carolina, to the north, South Carolina on the east side.
