The name Alabama comes from an Indian word meaning "thicket clearers." As of 2000, the population of the state was 4,447,100 making Alabama the 23rd most populous state in the USA. Agriculture accounts for much of the industry in Alabama, with cotton, corn, peanuts, soybeans, poultry, and livestock being the state's main commodities.
